About Us

The Teenage Opioid Safety Initiative educates teenagers on opioids to encourage safe decision-making, help prevent opioid addiction, and save lives.

After surveying a group of middle schoolers in our community, we discovered that kids were not being properly educated about opioids and the dangers of opioid addiction. Most of the students reported having little to no idea what the opioid crisis was or that the drugs themselves were so addictive. As a response, we created a short, 15-minute presentation designed to keep students engaged while also teaching them about opioid safety. We first started giving these presentations virtually, during the early stages of the COVID-19 lockdown. We presented to numerous classes in various schools around Los Angeles. In late 2020 and all of 2021, we worked on turning our presentation into a video segment accompanied by a full lesson plan to make our information more accessible to a wider audience and more easily applicable in typical high school health or drug safety classes.

Our plan is to spread our message and information across the country in the hopes of saving the lives of hundreds of kids who will be able to identify and safely manage opioids. What makes our project unique, besides the fact that the opioid epidemic is hardly included in high school curriculums or drug safety lessons, is that our lessons are taught by us the teenagers to other teenagers. We find that peer-to-peer advice is more impactful and effective for a teenage audience. Our goal is simply to save lives by providing teenagers with the information to make safe and educated decisions about opioids for themselves.
